CAF – C1: MAMELODI SUNDOWNS AFRICAN CHAMPION 2016

South Africans take over from Tout Puissant Mazembe

October 23, 2016

Zamalek won 1-0 at Borg El Arab against Mamelodi Sundowns in final of Champion’s League. Insufficient result to turn things around after 3-0 conceded in the first leg.

Back to the wall and pushed by some 70,000 fans, the men of Moamen SOLIMAN took control upon kick-off of the match and procured themselves a first opportunity through STANLEY. The Nigerian was inconsistent but crashed into the face of ONYANGO, sent out in that encounter. The Ugandan goalkeeper of Sundowns had to give way to SANDILANDS (28th). Although dominated, South Africans responded and BILLAT even hit the bar.

In the second half, the Egyptian pressure intensified and Mamelodi ended up bending. The very stirring STANLEY let fly a shot close to the post and opened the scoring: 1-0 (65th).  The White Knights went looking for the two goals to tie the aggregate win. But a head by MAYUKA was saved on the line.  This narrow defeat allows of the champion of South Africa to be crowned champion for the first time in its history and taking over from TP Mazembe.
