Don Bosco take the Congo Cup
Sunday, August 26th was a momentous day for the Salesians of Don Bosco as, in the magnificent atmosphere of the TPM stadium, they swept aside Veti Club from Matadi 4-0 to lift the Congo Cup for the first time in their history. USHINDI (13th minute), Darryl NYANDORO (18th minute, penalty), Hervé KAMBA (70th minute) and Reagan PEMBELE (80th minute) gave their opponents no chance. USHINDI took the title of top goalscorer: his 4 goals in the final stages giving him a total of 11 for the competition and placing him well ahead of the field. The Salesians were handed the trophy by Deo NKUSU, interim governor of Bas-Congo Province, who had been asked to preside by the Chairman, Moise KATUMBI.
Thanks to this success, Champion KATUMBI’s team will take part in the 2013 Confederation Cup.
TPM beaten in friendly
On Saturday, August 25th Les Corbeaux invited Zambia’s Red Arrows, currently 5th in their championship, to the TPM stadium for a friendly. The Red Arrows proved to be more than worthy opponents, winning the game 1-0 and showing how much work MPUTU and his teammates still have to do. Patrick PHIRI scored the game’s only goal (24th minute). Despite dominating the visitors for most of the ninety minutes, the home team never managed to equalize. “For me, this is a very good result”, Les Corbeaux’s president, Moïse KATUMBI, declared after the match, “It will make the players think. Just because we have beaten Zamalek twice doesn’t mean all the hard work has been done”.
A vital weekend for Mazembe
Next weekend will be decisive in determining which two teams will progress to the semi-finals from each of the Champions League groups. With Espérance de Tunis already certain to finish top of group A, the CAF designated the runners up when they expelled Etoile Sportive du Sahel from the competition following a pitch invasion that led to ESS’s match with Espérance being abandoned. As a result, Sunshine Stars of Nigeria where elevated to second place and will now play the winners of group B in the semi-finals.
In group B, TPM (7 points) will go through to the semis if they beat the current group leaders, Al Ahly, when they meet on Sunday, September 2nd (15.30) in Lubumbashi. By then TPM will know whether Berekum Chelsea is still in the running for the second semi-final place, as the team from Ghana will play already-eliminated Zamalek, in Cairo, the day before.
The last two games will take place on September 15th and 16th, with Mazembe playing away to Berekum, in Accra, and Ahly playing Zamelek in a Cairo derby.
