WAC Casablanca, champion 25 years later!

November 4, 2017

In front of 45,800 spectators heated with white at the Mohamed V stadium of Casablanca, WAC was crowned champion of Africa, Saturday, November 4 evening on the occasion of the final second leg. Thanks to its fans, ranked among the "best 12th men" on the continent and the world, Wydad has offered its fans, 25 years later, a second trophy in the Champion’s League! After the AS FAR Rabat (1982), the Raja Club Athletic (1989, 1997 and 1999), it was the turn of the WAC, already winner in 1992, to offer the Kingdom of Morocco the most prestigious club competitions CAF.

From the kickoff, Al Ahly is dominating and more enterprising but failing on the young goalkeeper Zouhair LAAROUBI, who saved his team on two class actions of striker Moamen ZAKARIA in the first half. In 12 minutes (where the Egyptian number 8 was offside), the Moroccan goalkeeper played as in handball to save his camp. At the 33rd, the Egyptian midfielder still stumbles on the goalkeeper, author of a reflex save at 16 meters from his goal. What an action!

The Moroccans are then very good at defending and are doing well, containing the Egyptian assaults. On the other hand, the WAC could even lead at half-time, but a shot by Abdeladim KHADROUF was deflected before hitting the crossbar of Sheriff Ekramy (30th).

Back from the locker room, WAC is more offensive and incisive in building its game forward. His defensive block is close to the centerline and he is rewarded 21 minutes from the end. A very good head of Walid EL KARTI, between two Egyptian defenders, on a crossing ball by Achraf BENCHARKI – who was not offside as the Egyptians could believe it – allows the locals to lead 1-0. Therefore, the WAC will manage its lead, his audience accompanies him, even if the big Al Ahly pushes... The score will not evolve until the final whistle of the referee Gambian Papa Bakary GASSAMA.
